Advance Wars 1, when it comes to well-hidden secrets, is probably one of the deepest editions of the series to date.

Unlockable Modes

Virtually all modes: Complete Fog of War in Field Training.

Advance Campaign: Beat NC and buy from Hachi (1 coin).

Commanding Officers

Grit: Complete Campaign, having used Max in Max Strikes! (50 coins).

Kanbei: Complete Campaign (50 coins).

Sonja: Complete Campaign, having done Sonja’s secret missions. (60 coins).

Eagle: Complete Campaign, having used Sami in the 4 Green Earth missions and beaten Rivals! (80 coins).

Drake: Complete Campaign, having used Andy in the 4 Green Earth missions (50 coins).

Sturm: Buy all above COs (100 coins).  Please note he is not usable in the War Room.

Nell: Complete Advance Campaign (100 coins).

Secret Missions

Special Intel: Complete all the other Field Training missions, leave the Field Training menu, then re-enter it.

Olaf’s Sea Strike!: Beat Olaf’s Navy by routing him, as against capturing the HQ.

Sonja's Secret Missions: To play these missions - named Divide and Conquer!, Sami Marches On! and Sonja’s Goal! - complete Kanbei Arrives!, Mighty Kanbei! and Kanbei’s Error? in 8, 10 and 12 days respectively (or less).

Rivals!: Use Sami for the 4 Green Earth missions.

The Final Battle Allies

Depending on which COs you use throughout the campaign, your allies for The Final Battle will change.  Following is a list of the various combination available:

Centre (Orange Star): No matter which COs you use, you'll always have Andy.

Left Side (Blue Moon):

• Blue Moon is Grit if Max is used in Max Strikes!
• Blue Moon is Max if Andy is used in Max Strikes! and Olaf's Navy! is beaten by HQ capture.
• Blue Moon is Olaf if Andy is used in Max Strikes! and Olaf's Navy! is beaten by rout.

Right Side (Green Earth):

If you manage to fulfil several of the CO conditions on this list, the highest item on the list takes priority (So if you fulfil both the first and second conditions, you'll always play as Eagle).

• Green Earth is Eagle if Sami is used for the four Green Earth missions;
• Green Earth is Kanbei if Sonja is fought in a battle;
• Green Earth is Drake if Andy is used for the four Green Earth missions;
• Green Earth is Sami if none of the above conditions are fulfilled.
